It starts outside. Halle hikes the trails of the Valley of the Sun — the red rock formations of Sedona, the ponderosa pines outside Flagstaff, the wide desert plains at golden hour. She's not looking for anything specific. She's collecting feeling.
A particular quality of light through canyon walls. The texture of dried bark. The color of a monsoon sky building in the west. These become a mental library that feeds the studio. Cooking does the same — a new combination of colors and textures on a plate is its own kind of composition study.
Once a feeling is clear enough to work with, the question is: what does it want to be? Some feelings want to be painted — big color, movement, something immediate.
